On that day of Pentecost, which seems to have been the
inaugural service for this fledgling church, who ministered at that
service? Sure, we all know Peter
got over his fears, took the pulpit, and let it fly to the tune of three
thousand converts in one day!
Praise the Lord! But who
else served that day? THEY did! How do I know? Three thousand were baptized that
day. Somehow I can’t see Peter
preaching and then baptizing three thousand all by himself. THEY were
there! THEY helped
them form a line. THEY made sure each knew why they
were there. THEY helped them out of the water.
THEY helped with the
children. THEY probably helped baptize!
“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and
that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And THEY continued steadfastly in the
apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:41).
When that service was over and the work of instructing and caring for these new disciples got under way, THEY were right there. Remember, there were three thousand converts that day. Verse 42 tells us what THEY filled their time with in the days that followed. The apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer was the order of the days. Did Peter do all the follow-up teaching? Could Peter have done all the follow-up teaching? Did Peter answer all those questions himself? Did Peter lead each group in the breaking of bread? Did Peter lead all the prayer times? No! He had help. He had THEY.
“And THEY continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42).
