Whatever the part of the body of Christ you are called to
be, there is power from on high to be and function in that role. God’s call is seldom convenient and at
times overwhelming. The simple joy
of knowing ministry is where you are gives you a place to begin. (More later on this.) The power is His. The glory is His
too. We need to make sure we’re
plugged in. Jesus referred to it as abiding.
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides
in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me” (John 15:4).
Stay plugged into Me as I am plugged into you. That’s where the power is. He is the power. Many people refer to that power as the anointing. When something is anointed, it is set apart. You
are set apart to fulfill a vital role; your ministry matters. If you are a part of His body, you have
a part to fulfill. Every part is
needful and vital.
Jesus, as the head of the church
and the head on the body, His church, had a role and task to perform. He is our example. Jesus was anointed, set apart, and
empowered to do the ministry to which He was appointed. That anointing came from God and was
certainly equal to the task.
“How God anointed Jesus
of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and
healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (Acts
10:38).
The word anointed
is chrio in the original
language. It means to anoint, consecrating Jesus to the messianic office and furnishing Him with
the necessary powers for its administration (Thayers). Jesus was set apart and furnished with
the necessary powers to do His ministry.
This is no less true for us.
With any calling comes the anointing to do what you’re called to do.
“If anyone ministers (serves),
let him do it as with the ability which
God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:11).
